The Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark is a globally unique area of inter- national value, where geological heritage and landscapes are managed through a holistic policy of protection, education and sustainable development.
Reykjanes is unique when it comes to tectonic plate rifts: this is where the Mid-Atlantic ridge rises from the sea, and it’s one of the few places in the world where the Eurasian and North-American tectonic plate rifts can be observed on land.
In the geopark, geological, natural and cultural heritage sites are leveraged to educate society about the opportunities that can be uncovered close to home. That can then help develop and nourish local industries, such as innovation, tourism and food production.
Work across borders is also important – the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark is a member of the European Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network – large networks that link Reykjanes to an array of international contacts.
